Welcome to one of the most famous historic stadiums of Greece. Kaftanzoglio, although there have been already 45 years since its inauguration, remains today a modern and well-equipped stadium due to its renovation for the Olympic Games in 2004.
It was built by a donation of the Kaftanzoglou Foundation, hence its name. When it was inaugurated in 1960 it was the first modern stadium built to Olympic specifications in Greece; a real adornment and one of the symbols of the city of Thessaloniki. For quite a long time it was the largest stadium in the Balkans and even today it is the second largest in Greece; the first being the Olympic Stadium in Kalogreza.
It is located at a particularly convenient place, on the outskirts of the city of Thessaloniki , but only 2.5 km from its centre. It has a very important location in the urban design of the city and is part of a larger sport and cultural centre of international significance, which includes the other sporting facilities of Iraklis FC, indoor basketball and volleyball courts (Ivanofio and Katsanio), the national swimming pool, the Sport Museum as well as the Telloglio Foundation. Finally, it is very close to both Higher Educational Institutes of the city: The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Macedonia .
Although the Greeks know the stadium mainly as home of Iraklis FC, one of the clubs playing in the first league of the Greek football championship, it actually belongs to the General Sport Secretariat. Its premises host most of Thessaloniki’s Track and Field Federations for contests and trainings, while at the same time it houses many confederations and sport associations.
During its long history it has hosted football games of the Greek Championship , 18 games of the Greek National Team , a European Final of the Top Teams Cup , Balkan and Mediterranean track and field contests as well as other international sport events with the most important being that of the qualifying football matches of the 2004 Olympics.
