Uses of the Stadium

The Kaftanzoglio Stadium has been designed in such a way that allows it to be used both as sport and as cultural grounds.

As an athletics-field it serves the needs of the most Track and Field Federations of Thessaloniki, both for their training and for their contests. Since it is one of the most modern stadiums of the country from time to time it has hosted –and it still hosts- very important national and international events, such as panhellenic track and field championships, Balkan and Mediterranean contests, European meetings and World Championships.

As a football field it has been used as home of Iraklis FC, a club of the first Greek league. Furthermore, it is used by the Greek National Football Team when the trainer wishes. In the past it has also hosted a final match of the European Top Teams Cup.

It is used as a sporting area by individual Thessalonicians wishing to exercise. Due to its vicinity to the city’s centre and the University it is the most favourite sporting area for the inhabitants of the city.

It houses many Federations and Associations, such as SEGAS (Greek Athletics Federation), Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Cycling, Badminton, Kick-Boxing, Persons with Special Needs, and Rugby Federations. Furthermore, the Kaftanzoglio Stadium houses all associations of the Union of Sport Federations (EAS) of Thessaloniki. All federations housed within the Kaftanzoglio use the premises of the corresponding training halls for their preparation.

The Stadium hosts various cultural events and concerts as well as conferences and meetings on sports.

It is used daily by students from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport (TEFAA) and the Military School of Corps Officers. It is also used for the sport examinations of candidates wishing to study in police and military schools.
